I have a short list of critters that are often heard, but seldom seen. The spring peeper in the featured image for this post is on that list. I was thrilled to finally get to see one so I could take a photo earlier this summer.
Also on the list are the whippoorwill and rain crow. I’ve painted a rain crow in watercolors, but it’s from a reference that shows the bird all fluffed up – a very seldom seen thing.
I’d like to start this little series over in my Ozark pigment oils. The rain crow (or cuckoo, as they’re sometimes called) would be from a reference showing it’s normal, sleek, appearance.
However, I have yet to get a pic of a whippoorwill. These are very often heard but seldom seen, especially with lighting suitable for a photo. If you have one and would share it with me so I can use it as a reference, please let me know!
Otherwise, I might just paint a nocturn with Gloria the old oak in it and title it something like ‘somewhere in there is a whippoorwill’, lol.
